I mean, I gave birth to her and all, but sometimes, I just have to shake my head:</span><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Dry carbs. No butter on anything. Dry Eggo Waffles, plain uncut bagels, plain bread. DRY DRY DRY. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Major chocoholic. Like, you can't even say the word without her asking for chocolate. I don't mind the stuff, but her love of chocolate is admirable.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Fearless. I was totally a weenie by comparison. She will climb anything and everything, and brushes off a tumble with ease. </span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Then there are moments where I totally know she is my kid:</span></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Oh man do we love pork rinds. I had to throw out a container of pork rinds someone brought over as a gag (little did they know) because we were both eating them too frequently and with too much gusto; AND I didn't want to be the daycare mom packing her kid both organic yogurt and pork rinds. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Popcorn for days. She will take popcorn out of my hand, even if we have a big bowl to share.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">She is hecking strong. At first I thought her pediatrician said "Oh wow she is strong" as a generic like they'd say to most kids who fight and throw a fit, but now I think they really mean it after she threw a solid right jab and head butted me while I was trying to hold her so they could check her ears. </span></li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">And then there are moments where even I think she's sweeter than I deserve:<br /><ul>
<li>Smooches, and then the most loving pair of eyes and a big smile looking back at me, ready to pepper me with more kisses and hugs.</li>
<li>She'll count my reps when I'm working out at home and sometimes workout with me (or add more resistance. Oof). Right now she jumps numbers, so her counting reps is great, hehehe. "Ten reps kiddo? Well, I only counted four, but who am I to argue?"</li>
<li>Seeing her learn stuff. She's putting together sentences now and "Mommy tank you. Thank you mommy" is a big one now, even for little things like getting water. Aww. </li>
</ul>
</span></div>

<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iOv_kfOy1bI/XEZ3Z-oPhdI/AAAAAAAANio/QjZJOyitn-ICgt6bQsl6e6YBztdkQnySgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_8829.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iOv_kfOy1bI/XEZ3Z-oPhdI/AAAAAAAANio/QjZJOyitn-ICgt6bQsl6e6YBztdkQnySgCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_8829.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">So it's hecking cold AF and I don't know of anything better than a ton of hot spicy broth and an unlimited amount of food to put in that spicy broth.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">First off, I can't find my favorite hot pot packet locally, which is Lao Gan Ma - if anyone sees it at either of the Asian grocery stores, lemme know because I can't find anything with that same kind of kick. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SDx4AyvHn2U/XEZ4Aw7pzQI/AAAAAAAANiw/5n_qhi3r46cLqKIih4vM7fzLuybN71jsgCLcBGAs/s1600/LaoGanMa.webp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SDx4AyvHn2U/XEZ4Aw7pzQI/AAAAAAAANiw/5n_qhi3r46cLqKIih4vM7fzLuybN71jsgCLcBGAs/s320/LaoGanMa.webp" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">She knows what's up with the broth.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Okay, any way, back to hot pot. I had friends new and old (Phairhead and her SexyBeast, what's UPPPP) to eat some of this hot goodness, and let me tell you why doing hot pot at home is awesome:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<ol>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">If you have a kid, you can put on TV, give them some not-spicy food (either some stuff you cooked in the broth before you put the spicy packet in, or some good ol' fashioned kid favorites like pizza or chicken nuggets. Pizza was what I got when I was a kid and my dad, aunties, and uncles would go to town on some hot pot).</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Your friends can bring over their kid(s) and they can play and watch TV while the adults socialize and now you get to enjoy your meal instead of being on high alert making sure little Cammy and Ryu don't burn themselves with boiling water and hot chili oil in a restaurant where all of the non-kid friendly patrons are giving you stink eye for bringing your kids in the first place. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">IT IS SO MUCH CHEAPER. Hot pot in Albany is basically gonna run you at least $50 for two people. $20 pp for AYCE, $10 for the pot of broth. YES, you don't have to do any of the work and you might have more variety, but I'm pretty sure it cost me around $50-60 for a hot pot for 6 people with a ton of meat leftover, so whatever.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Hot pot leftovers become stirfry for the week!</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It is delicious so hush up and start eating. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">You get to cook your own food at the dinner table, and it's really fast.</span></li>
</ol>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">One of the new folks that came over had never had hot pot before, so that was cool that he got to try it. Annoyingly, both of the Asian grocery stores were kinda lacking when it came to sliced meats, which is INSANE because it is the middle of winter, which is primo hot pot season. Up your game, Albany!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">And yep, you can make out the Boop's little finger pointing to a bowl up top. Gotta start 'em young!</span></div>

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B6qwUypb0gg/XEZyy1wLdMI/AAAAAAAANic/HrdKwchbSW4-HtU-QeCzwN2DOasWR3kPgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_8920.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B6qwUypb0gg/XEZyy1wLdMI/AAAAAAAANic/HrdKwchbSW4-HtU-QeCzwN2DOasWR3kPgCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_8920.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Kiddo loves the snow, even when the windchill brings it -5 below. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">There are no sick days for parents, but Baby Shark on loop as my little sidekick requests, snacks in bed, and cuddles are a pretty good second to a sick day and actually sleeping.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">There are so many moments I used to get anxious about:</span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Will I have to nurse her to sleep forever???</span></li>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">As it turns out, her getting sick last year around this time and not nursing to sleep was the transition that got us out of that habit.</span></li>
</ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Food. OMG what will she eat?</span></li>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Some days she eats more than others. Don't make a big deal out of it. Give her something new every now and then when you can, and otherwise she's happy with rice and eggs. You'll figure something out.</span></li>
</ul>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">And now that we're in the potty training stage, well, I've embraced a few things (Uh, this'll get kind of squicky for anyone who is easily grossed out by potty training, so feel free to skip ahead):</span></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Bribery: I initially started out with 1 "choc choc" (M&M chocolate) for sitting on the potty, and 2 "choc chocs" for actually using the potty, but then she wised up and learned to ask to go to the potty every time she wanted a chocolate. Smart, kiddo. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Electronic Devices: One tiny tablet will buy me a few extra minutes of sitting time for an antsy toddler.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Not caring too much, and indulging her every time she says the word "potty".</span></li>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I was really surprised when she asked to go potty today when I felt super sick (and honestly would have just rather changed a diaper instead of the whole process we go through with getting undressed to go to bathroom), but then she used the toilet seat toddler insert, actually sat on it (she usually attempts to sit on it, screams and freaks out, then goes to her toddler potty next to the tub) and let out a good long whiz. HECK YES I AM BEST MOM EVER MY TODDLER IS USING THE TOILET SOMETIMES. Look, I need to take my victories where I can get them, 'kay?</span></li>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">That one got two choc chocs and a ton of praise. </span></li>
</ul>
</ul>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Are there parents that don't get sick of stuff on repeat? Kiddo has watched Baby Shark about eleventy billion times, and I find it kind of comforting, and she's starting to learn repetition and patterns from it, so it seems to have a little value.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Marie Kondo - that series was really sweet. She's the lady that says to get rid of your extra junk and only keep stuff that "Sparks Joy". I basically had to do that when I moved, but it's nice to see other forms of media and celebrity encouraging less stuff, and to have your kids help out. Kiddo's not quite 2, and I've made sure she sees me clean and knows how much I like a tidy place, and she'll now help me put away dishes and put dirty dishes in the sink.</span></div>

<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uB2_8Khf-x8/XDP9yt6YfII/AAAAAAAANhs/f4yFoB3tnYwicGeTbq2MpM8BoQtjnK0KgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_8500.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uB2_8Khf-x8/XDP9yt6YfII/AAAAAAAANhs/f4yFoB3tnYwicGeTbq2MpM8BoQtjnK0KgCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_8500.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Black and Blue is still one of the "newer" upscale steak houses in Albany. It's modern, sleek, and on the formal side, but without airs. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">And they have pretzel bread. HELLO.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Service was attentive, polite, and efficient - my ideal for an upscale steakhouse. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FQGr7Zev58c/XDP9yquSkdI/AAAAAAAANhw/1kWgB6Vhf6gRQ_r2RQrqacZBfApfuU4wACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_8501.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FQGr7Zev58c/XDP9yquSkdI/AAAAAAAANhw/1kWgB6Vhf6gRQ_r2RQrqacZBfApfuU4wACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_8501.JPG" width="240" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"> Steak Tartare ($18.00): </span><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.9); font-size: 14.7px; letter-spacing: 0.7px;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">diced tenderloin with onion, garlic, capers, horseradish aioli, truffle oil, and a panko-crusted ‘5 minute’ egg. </span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Steak tartare is one of those dishes I <b>*have*</b> to get when I see it on a menu. I prefer my tartare as more of a rough mince than a thicker dice, and the generous amount of cheese made absolutely no sense to me (do people like tartare with cheese?). I'd probably also dial back on some of the aioli, as I want more of the raw meat flavors to come though. If the meat's good, you don't need to dress it up with so many accessories. All of these opinions make me sound like I didn't like it, but it was quite good. Just some minor tweaks, or personal preferences.<br />That said, the truffle oil and 5 minute poached egg were phenomenal additions. Holy smokes - great combination.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Pair this with some fries and you've got yourself a great bar dinner. And let's be honest, I probably could have just stopped right here and had a perfectly content night out, except...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FlwJoIA7hqk/XDP9ypb1cvI/AAAAAAAANh0/UlgO4IA2uFwBEfm01pmONs_u0atv5sIuQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_8503.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FlwJoIA7hqk/XDP9ypb1cvI/AAAAAAAANh0/UlgO4IA2uFwBEfm01pmONs_u0atv5sIuQCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_8503.JPG" width="240" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Oh right they have steak. Ridiculously well cooked steak.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The 14 oz Ribeye ($48) was cooked exactly to temp as requested (medium rare, thanks!). I find it so hard for most restaurants to nail medium rare through and through that I usually order rare and wind up getting something a little over medium rare. But not at Black & Blue. Medium rare is medium rare. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cpI6hzbio4Y/XDP9zenny6I/AAAAAAAANh4/KjbizSsgt5gTRL2OLM1LpTtMvYyAfKgzQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_8505.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cpI6hzbio4Y/XDP9zenny6I/AAAAAAAANh4/KjbizSsgt5gTRL2OLM1LpTtMvYyAfKgzQCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_8505.JPG" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Black & Blue's house rub is mainly salt, pepper, and some rosemary notes, which go very well with the steak. I gilded the fatty lily with some truffle butter, because we all know ribeye steaks don't have nearly enough fat on their own. Amirite?</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-65ISTN5BpZE/XDP9zyXmn5I/AAAAAAAANh8/HJdrauREHqE73vAZZoCtHVW8ib06QQqrACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_8506.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-65ISTN5BpZE/XDP9zyXmn5I/AAAAAAAANh8/HJdrauREHqE73vAZZoCtHVW8ib06QQqrACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_8506.JPG" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Filet Mignon ($44) au poivre ($12), which adds a black peppercorn and brandy sauce, haricots verts, and hash brown rosti cake.<br /><br />The pepper sauce was a bit of overkill, as Black & Blue does a beautiful job with the meats on their own. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-32PQysD9SOM/XDP90SI3gHI/AAAAAAAANiA/qYzwiZgDtTIkq7e7kGYMRhUd79F16F9GACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_8507.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-32PQysD9SOM/XDP90SI3gHI/AAAAAAAANiA/qYzwiZgDtTIkq7e7kGYMRhUd79F16F9GACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_8507.JPG" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">A side of wild mushrooms ($8) with tarragon, onion, and shallot because I simply cannot resist any dish that includes tarragon or shallots. Combine the two? I'm in.<br /><br />Great firm texture on the mushrooms. A solid side.</span></div>
<br />

<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Why is Daniel Tiger the pied piper of toddlers? </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Wow, tantums are no joke</span></li>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I can see how people cave in to get kids to stop crying, but much like my pregnancy, I try to keep an observational mindset with this to figure out why she's really crying and pick and choose my battles. No cookies or other rewards for a fit, but I don't really care if she thinks she "won" something by asking to eat the vegetables off of my plate instead of her own.</span></li>
</ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It is really cool to see her make developmental leaps and learn communication</span></li>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Sidenote: This means she understands EVERYTHING I say</span></li>
</ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Why does my child think the expensive packets of apple sauce so much better than my homemade apple sauce packets?</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It's hard to tell which one of us likes coloring more</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I don't think I had any preference about what I wore until I was almost done with middle school (trust me, if you see a picture of me from about 7-13, this will be painfully obvious), but there is one pair of pants she is really fond of wearing.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I really like being single. I get to focus on me and my little Boop, and I've been working for a career that allows me to spend more time with her while still advancing. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Sometimes I just think of myself as this nervous 20-something who doesn't really know anything, and then I hear stuff come out of my mouth that surprises even me with how much grown up adult stuff I know, and how I can communicate it. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Little things make me feel rich:</span></li>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I can keep the heat on high for my little Boop so she can sleep comfortably</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I can buy some convenience foods (like those dadgum fruit and veggie packets) that she loves so very much</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Sushi once every couple of months</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Other than that, I pretty much only buy my underoos new and everything else comes from the thrift store because holy cow things are expensive.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Last year I was too broke to buy Christmas presents for anyone, and divorce is expensive, but this year I could afford to buy people presents so yay.</span></li>
</ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Kiddo went from loving baths to HATING THEM BECAUSE THIS IS SOME KIND OF SATAN WATER GET IT OFF ME AND STOP TRYING TO DROWN ME YOU AWFUL WOMAN. Turns out, all she needed were some bubbles in the water, and bingo bango - the word "bath" has taken on the gravity of "Daniel Tiger" or "Ice Cream" because as soon as I say it, it must be done.</span></li>
</ul>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Went to <a href="http://www.padthaialbany.com/">Pad Thai Noodle</a> on Everett Road with my best buddy, Fussy Little Blog proprietor <a href="https://fussylittleblog.com/">Daniel B.</a> to grab some face melting spicy hot Thai food for lunch. Pad Thai has a teeny tiny shared parking lot in the front, and a slightly larger place to park in the back. There are a few tables inside to seat about 15 or so people.<br /><br />We started off with Papaya Salad ($9) because I freaking love papaya salad and will order it any time I see it on the menu. This was a little on the small side - the plate was small, and almost half of it was iceberg lettuce. We ordered this at the hottest level, and it did not disappoint.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Next up was an order of Soft Shell Crab ($10.00), which was fried to perfection and a great foil to the heat from the papaya salad. I could eat a basket of these.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wgykjyHRj2o/XBh9qKROfGI/AAAAAAAANhY/PJRoaMiLBM0aP6dwV603kyuJnQxMhItAwCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_8387.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wgykjyHRj2o/XBh9qKROfGI/AAAAAAAANhY/PJRoaMiLBM0aP6dwV603kyuJnQxMhItAwCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_8387.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The Boat Noodle Soup caught Dan's eye, and I'd been getting over the Cold from Heck and had been jonesing for a bowl of comfort, and this provided just that. Well, until we got about 2/3rds of the way through and the hottest spice level became too much for me and all I could feel was burning and pain. But before that I tasted a wonderfully rich broth, and some of the most tender slices of pork I'd ever had before. I'd order this again a touch less spicy to enjoy it more. Oh, and rice noodles (aka the best kind of noodles)!</span></div>

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HlFZ5r_CvDI/XAM8qebo1CI/AAAAAAAANgY/d9QLtrSHarwDtPAChdPD2sMOKhL0s5NEACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_8194.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HlFZ5r_CvDI/XAM8qebo1CI/AAAAAAAANgY/d9QLtrSHarwDtPAChdPD2sMOKhL0s5NEACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_8194.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">If you've ever gone out to brunch, you know the sky's the limit and you can really set yourself back a pretty penny.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I've been trying to get out more and socialize when I don't have the kiddo. That might sound kind of lame to some people, but I've been trying to socialize since I first moved to Albany 356 years ago, so now that I've got some solid friends and continue to add more to the pile, it's less "Find cool people to hang out with, oh god why don't I have any friends???" and more "Man, I know so many cool people. I gotta try and hang out with them."</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Where were we? Right. Brunch. Some of my friends like going out for brunch on the weekends. It's nice. I can't do it all of the time because single mom budget, but still.<br /><br />I've also been kind of meh about my random weekly meals. Brunch and lunch out is a nice way to try something a little different, and maybe use it for inspiration for the week. Nine times out of ten I wind up thinking of how many steps and dishes it would take, but sometimes I get a inspiration on how to incorporate something into every day life.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I recently went out to Innovo Kitchen in Latham and got the Power 4 salad ($8), which is red kale, watercress, arugala, spinach, golden raisins, roasted grapes, and toasty pistachios tossed in caesar vinaigrette. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I wasn't sure what roasted grapes meant, but they were lightly roasted and then chilled before being tossed with the salad, so they still had a bunch of texture and weren't just big squishy gobs of sad grapes (which was what I was mentally preparing myself for). They added a nice contrast to all of the greenery. Also adding textural contrast were the crunchy pistachios - nicely minced and easy to get a tiny bit of pistachio in every bite. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Great conservative amount of dressing to keep it all together and add flavor but not overwhelm. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">My coffee consumption is now at comical records, so of course I had to get a cup of coffee ($3.75), which comes in a French press. I'm not a huge French press fan, but everyone else is a fan of me drinking coffee before noon and becoming less of an exhausted gremlin.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Service is polite and friendly. Open kitchen in the back you can see. Gets busy around noon for brunch, but they're open at 10 am, so if you go before there's no wait. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Namu Korean BBQ is located on Central Ave in Albany. It has a modern interior with grills inside to cook your own BBQ. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">They have $11 lunch specials which were quite substantial - I got the spicy squid. It had a hearty amount of squid and veggies, plus rice and banchan sides. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It was great to pop in on a chilly lunch and eat some warming food, and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of squid - dontcha just feel sad when it's a plate of veggies and like, 3 pieces of squid?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Nicely spicy, too!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Know what's better than dan tats? Portuguese egg tarts! I took a trip over to Danbury, CT, which is a sizable Portuguese community and stopped by a bakery for some snacks - an espresso, shrimp pie, and two flaky egg tarts.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Why are Portuguese egg tarts better than Chinese egg tarts (aka dan tat)? They're shatteringly flaky, and have a burnished top. Think dan tats, but the tops have been bruleed. <br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-udOe0wWWGUE/W6uyjcI_wPI/AAAAAAAANfE/XQzcTRW08SUMg6msbvWT9A06kAHNnFoMACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_7235.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-udOe0wWWGUE/W6uyjcI_wPI/AAAAAAAANfE/XQzcTRW08SUMg6msbvWT9A06kAHNnFoMACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_7235.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I think part of living in Albany for a while is fondly remembering restaurants long gone. I was reminiscing about Saso's, and how much I loved that Indulgence roll. Salmon, cream cheese, avocado, and black caviar. All of my favorite things in sushi. Not sure I've had a better roll since then, and I wasn't sure why I hadn't ordered this any where else until just recently. I think the original Indulgence roll had crab in it too, but crab's never done much for me in a roll. Kind of like shredded cheese in a taco - it's there, but not really discernible to me. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j_asMRI1gGk/W6uymo4lr9I/AAAAAAAANfM/9g-Yvx01fKkeSp4Gb11NgnMCdLlF53UiACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_7237.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j_asMRI1gGk/W6uymo4lr9I/AAAAAAAANfM/9g-Yvx01fKkeSp4Gb11NgnMCdLlF53UiACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_7237.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Black caviar popping FTW! Also had a simple yellowtail & scallion roll on the side. So glad I got these!</span>Albany Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17860306399700516367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4767846951205787163.post-88179117534003483722018-09-09T07:24:00.003-07:002018-09-09T07:24:27.430-07:00Momofuku Birthday Cake<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I love an excuse to bake a cake. And Momofuku's birthday cake is my hands down go-to cake. And this time it was for an actual birthday!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">To be honest, the hardest part is not eating all of the cake crumbs before it's time to decorate the cake.</span>Albany Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17860306399700516367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4767846951205787163.post-67290803417649407802018-08-17T21:52:00.000-07:002018-08-17T21:52:36.614-07:00Oysters & Ice Cream<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I went to Troy to grab a few nibbles recently. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-022sMHKDJ8Y/W3ejSyMIUxI/AAAAAAAANeU/9_559Xf9kFYNrEoSHM30JYoQfg-adJQgQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_6766.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-022sMHKDJ8Y/W3ejSyMIUxI/AAAAAAAANeU/9_559Xf9kFYNrEoSHM30JYoQfg-adJQgQCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_6766.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Went to <a href="https://www.plumb.bar/">Plumb Oyster Bar</a> to try a few of every oyster on hand. These ranged in price from $2.85-$3.00. A once in a while kind of place for me, but it's nice to change it up every now and then and try different varieties of oysters.<br /><br />I didn't grab a photo of the brussels sprouts, but they were smashing. Nicely roasted and charred halves that were covered in a balsamic sauce with crushed toasted hazelnuts. Really well done texturally.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The interior is a bit twee - like Wes Anderson's happy hour bar. Tiny tables. Warm, cozy lighting.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yFqL7QL4eBM/W3ejS8ddeNI/AAAAAAAANeY/cKRGcKY3FKYcVIiMMu-_Nl-fQiU9XFCtQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_6771.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yFqL7QL4eBM/W3ejS8ddeNI/AAAAAAAANeY/cKRGcKY3FKYcVIiMMu-_Nl-fQiU9XFCtQCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_6771.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Dutch Udder for ice cream. Cinnamon Toast Crunch on top, strawberry oreo below, both scooped into a birthday cake ice cream cone. Two scoops was a bit much for me, but I powered through it. It also helps that the flavors are rich, balanced, and well crafted. I'm normally not a cone person, but their craft cones are thin yet sturdy and maintained structural integrity throughout the half an hour or so it took me to eat these two massive scoops. The only tweak I'd like to see is for the cinnamon toast crunch bits to stay crunchy in the ice cream, as it came out a bit on the soggy and chewy side. Or maybe leave out the bits entirely. But oh that flavor. Forget cereal milk. Cinnamon Toast Crunch ice cream is where it's at.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Thanks Troy - it was nice to be back. If I had more time, I'd have rounded it out for dessert at The Confectionery. I really like how walkable downtown Troy has become.</span>Albany Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17860306399700516367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4767846951205787163.post-64991404442076219962018-08-05T19:11:00.000-07:002018-08-05T19:11:07.120-07:00Mom Thoughts<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I had to stop nursing around 8 or 9 months. I forget when I started supplementing with formula, but right around then was when it became clear that I wasn't making enough, and my previously bountiful freezer stash was dwindling. I went into breastfeeding with the same mindset I had for most of my pregnancy/motherhood experience: "Well, let's give it a shot." And hey, there's always formula. No shame in that game.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What a shitty way to lose weight. I was super stressed going through divorce and trying to balance life. Thank goodness for my friends and family there to prop me up. My dad encouraging me to finish one sushi roll. "Come on, you haven't even finished one roll..." </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">In the moment, I was partially relieved to regain the personal autonomy and not be a human food bag. Breastfeeding is tough. A few months out of one year old I have a kiddo with a good mouthful of teeth and a penchant for biting - I can't imagine breast feeding for more than a year. Power to the moms that can.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">At the same time, twinges of sadness every so often because if there's one thing I love doing, it's helping. I was pumping and before the stress went high, I was going to donate to kids in need. But then it turned out my own little kiddo needed it. I was glad to have a reserve. And really, up until one moment in time, my kiddo was going strong as an exclusively breast fed kid. Pretty neat. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Funnily enough, before I moved and the older milk expired, I warmed up the last few bags from the freezer to make a final bottle. The kiddo took a few swigs and then lost interest. I wound up pouring it down the drain a few hours later. I feel like it's a good natural finale. The kid practically lives on cow milk now.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Never had an issue feeding in public. Had a few comments about formula. Eh. Whatever. My kid's a juggernaut now, so it all worked out.</span>Albany Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17860306399700516367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4767846951205787163.post-86382813521046461582018-08-02T19:52:00.000-07:002018-08-02T19:52:24.442-07:00Single Mom Cold Brew Coffee<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It's summer, so I'll let you in on my secret cold brew recipe. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It's called Single Mom Cold Brew:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Make a pot of coffee, then drink it cold (over ice if you're feeling fancy).<br /><br />Repeat for 2-3 days, or until coffee runs out. Sometimes this only lasts 1.5 days. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Keep out of reach of incredibly inquisitive and clumsy child (who has clearly inherited her balance and grace from her mother. </span>Albany Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17860306399700516367noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4767846951205787163.post-72402006094688234042018-07-30T18:51:00.001-07:002018-07-30T18:51:04.900-07:00Northeast Chinese II<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kdeKZrlTRqc/W1-_zCj-AkI/AAAAAAAANdg/m8vZ0xvce3gX4URuFayBH_FnVHUhLgCRACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_6589.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kdeKZrlTRqc/W1-_zCj-AkI/AAAAAAAANdg/m8vZ0xvce3gX4URuFayBH_FnVHUhLgCRACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_6589.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Fried shrimp and crunchy peppers. So good. Salt an pepper shrimp, with a little kick.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mZfQMhjRiNU/W1-_1dNdPCI/AAAAAAAANdk/szomhpItT-oN6tfb_ygMbcQ6GikD0qcGACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_6588.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mZfQMhjRiNU/W1-_1dNdPCI/AAAAAAAANdk/szomhpItT-oN6tfb_ygMbcQ6GikD0qcGACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_6588.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">So good, it's worth ordering the chicken version, too. The red peppers aren't too spicy, but the crunch factor is awesome.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">They're redoing their menus so when I went the printed sheets were stapled together and less dishes than in previous trips. But before this their menus were comically long. Even pared down it's still a lot of food. </span><br />

Or ordering $50 of food for myself.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">There was a special! Okonomiyaki! $7.95 for a pancake sized for two people (but easily shared between 4). This was very kewpie mayo heavy, and oh man the shrimpy bits were great. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">But let's get to the star of the show, the sushi:</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Hello, gorgeous! Octopus, mackerel, white tuna/escolar, salmon, tuna, and a few rolls.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Oh, I also forgot to take a photo of the mini udon noodle soup I got ($6.95), which was fantastic as always. I think they're my favorite place for both sushi and udon noodle soups. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">First baked good in new apartment - cheesecake. Went from a consistent electric oven to a gas stove and range. <span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I've discovered I like graham cracker crusts as long as they stay crunchy. So I basically double the butter and sugar any recipe calls for and bake the hell out of it in the oven until it looks nearly burnt. Then it stays crispy.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The hardest part is waiting until it's cold to eat. </span>Albany Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17860306399700516367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4767846951205787163.post-72596504068527029562018-07-05T06:00:00.000-07:002018-07-18T18:57:46.363-07:00House to Apartment<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Sold the house. Moved to an apartment. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I pared down a lot of stuff in the months leading up to selling. House was on the market for a week before there was a buyer and I cannot imagine having to do that any longer. It was exhausting. The prep was intense, and single mom life is tidy, but not "house is show ready" spotless level of clean. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In the run up to selling just about every annoying thing that could break needed a repair. I'm looking at you saddle valve on the ice maker. Grrr. Well, the house made the decision to <strike>flee</strike> leave quite easy in the end. Maintaining a house is easy as a single lady, but man, the timing is tough as a single parent to a baby/toddler.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Still, selling is stressful and the buyers kept me on my toes and didn't I didn't get the "all clear" from my attorney until one week before our deadline to either close or cancel the sale. What a week. And what great friends and family I have for helping me do it all in a week. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">By some other stroke of luck I wound up in a pretty cute apartment that was flexible with my "I'm probably selling my house but I don't know exactly when" timeline vagueness. Aside from the carpeting (ugh, carpeting) it's great. I've never lived on my own. It's really cool that I get to decide everything and where everything goes. Yeah, I've got the kiddo, but she's stuck with me and my decisions. I guess she does impact some decision making, because if it were just me I'd probably just live in some tiny studio, but hey, gotta give the kid some structure and sense of her own space, so a 2 bedroom in a nice neighborhood it is. Man, I sound like such an adult. Who am I?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br />Speaking of the kiddo, I was wondering how she'd take to the transition. She's still tiny, and she took to it really well - no real issue whatsoever. She loves running around the apartment, and the open kitchen makes a game of tag/peek-a-boo easy and fun.<br /><br />And OMFG central air rocks. Haven't had that since I lived in the south. Woe betide my electric bill. </span>Albany Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17860306399700516367noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4767846951205787163.post-79570638415211617772018-03-24T20:20:00.000-07:002018-03-24T20:23:05.137-07:00The Cheap Pizza Taste Test<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A long time ago, in a lifetime far, far away I used to eat a ton of pizza. Like for the All Over Albany <a href="http://alloveralbany.com/features/tournament-of-pizza-2014/">Tournament of Pizza</a>. Yes, it's time to try a whole bunch of pizza. But not just any pizza - the cheapest, closest pizza I could find. </span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">I know what you're thinking - this is a fantastic idea made by a very intelligent and beautiful person. Or you're wondering what on earth would possess someone to try this and you think all of the pizzas will be terrible. Well, read on to find out how our taste buds fared. </span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A team of 9 folks (plus two kiddos) assembled to try as many of the cheap pizzas in Latham, NY as possible including</span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> fellow pizza partner in crime and pizza-aficionado, </span><a href="http://joninalbanyblog.blogspot.com/" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Jon in Albany</a><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">. Bless his soul for humoring this endeavor. This post and the details will be pretty brief because we cobbled it all together in about 24 hours. AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br />We sampled the following pizzas:<br /><br /><a href="https://locations.pricechopper.com/ll/US/NY/Latham/873-New-Loudon-Road">Price Chopper/Market 32</a></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Each pizza was picked up by a different person to ensure that the pizzas arrived on-location at the tasting destination at the same time. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">All pizzas were cheese flavored. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Little Bites & More - Control Pizza</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Here are the scores from first place going down, with a brief summation:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">1. Little Bites & More - the control pizza was a fine base pizza. This unsurprisingly had the most overall flavor, and was the most expensive of the pizzas at about $15 for a plain cheese pizzas</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">2. Stewart's - $7.99 for a whole pizza. This was the crowd surprise as best of the cheap pizzas in Latham! The general consensus of everyone who ate this and had previously had Stewart's pizza was "This is not how this normally tastes. It is usually not this good. It is usually very bad." We can chalk this up to several factors: The Wade Road Stewart's churns out a decent cheap pizza; Albany Jane ordered the pizza in-store with her baby in tow and they churned out a solid pie out of parental pity; luck.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">3. Price Chopper/Market 32 - Granny pie! Tons of cheese on this pie. A polarizing pizza for those who believe pizza should be in circular form only. Overall, a solid representative "pick up a pizza on the way home from work".</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">4. Cumberland Farms by Albany International Airport - $5.99. Dear god, these pizzas are so cheap and they're ready so quickly. They have been an entirely all too frequent addition to my diet of late. Sauce is pretty bland (did someone smear tomato paste on and call it a day? Probably, but who cares, it's so cheap), but good cheese ratio. The other pies I've had in the past haven't been so underbaked, but hey, ya gotta judge the slice in front of you.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">5. Cumberland Farms by Salvation Army - This scored a hair lower than the airport Cumby's but overall these were both pretty indistinguishable. Good job on chain consistency, Cumby's.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">6. Sam's Club - $8.99 oh my gosh this was just flat out awful. The pizza had this weird sour taste that lingered in the worst way possible. When trying all of these pies, I was callously blaming Stewart's or Cumberland Farms, because obviously gas station pizza would be the bottom of the barrel. From what I've heard, Sam's Club pizza is usually better and this may have been a one-off pie. I sure hope so because no one could even finish a small slice. That bad. </span></div>

<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Let's start with Chinese New Year. First lunar new year for the kiddo. Why is it once you have a kid, you have a new measurement system? It's interesting, that's for sure. First time I'd made siu yuk in a while.<br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b><u>Siu Yuk Recipe (Crispy Skin Pork)</u></b></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Pork belly, skin on</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Salt</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">5 spice</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">sugar & white pepper (optional)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />Rub the meaty side of the belly with your seasoning. Let it sit overnight in the fridge (or at least a few hours). Then blast it in the oven at 350F for a few hours and poke at the dried out skin. Put the pork belly on a rack to keep it from sticking to your roasting pan, or from deep frying in its own goodness. Blast the heat up to 400-450 to put some bubble on the skin and get it good and crispy.<br /><br />Let it cool off overnight, then use a cleaver to cut it in to tasty meaty bits.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">_____________________________</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Gosh, if there's a dish that says "LUNAR PARTAY", it's siu yuk - the shatteringly crisp skin, the way the fat melts in your mouth, and the major umami factor from the seasoned meaty bits. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I haven't been hosting too many parties lately. Mainly trying to get a grip on things and put mom life first and foremost. How many friends do I even have left? It turns out all of the friends. My home was filled with friends old and new: playing games, eating all of the foods, and (for a select few) running around with our kids. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Also, sorry guys for not labeling the giant bowl of raw meat for dumpling filling, but I really thought that plus dumpling wrappers made that obvious. I am happy to report no fatalities following dumplinggate 2k18. </span></div>
